SQL or Advantage Databsae

We are a small company with a custom database accounting package. We want to speed it up and stop indexing errors. I am looking for suggestions on options regarding Advantage and/or SQL. Developement time is crucial as well as cost and flexibility. Our progammer is new to SQL and Advantage.
