Writing and Reading to/from Serial Ports

Hi Everybody:

What I need is quite simple. I need to be able of write a byte in a serial port and read a byte form it.
I know that that can be done through asm statemenst but I think I've seen somewhere a more human way to do it. However, the asm way will be welcome.
