I've created a Delphi 5 program at school. When I try to compile this at home, Delphi says "cannot find system.pas" in the very first line.

Do you have a system.dcu in ...\delphi\lib?
Can you let us know exactly what that first line in the program is? Or do you mean the first line of a unit (a .PAS file)? Did you try already with other programs and does any of them give the same problem?
